Generate a character, then flesh it out with AI

Roll a ready-to-play character from a few choices, let AI write its appearance, personality and backstory, add an image, and save it to your vault.

PlayersUpdated October 11, 2026

The generator rolls a complete starting character for any of the eight systems from as few or as many choices as you give it. Rolling is free and happens on the spot. Two optional extras use AI and spend credits: ✨ Flesh out with AI writes the person behind the numbers, and Generate image paints them.

Before you start

  • A free character slot, as in part 1.
  • For the AI extras, AI credits: 1 to flesh out and 5 for an image, each time you press it. Every plan gets a monthly allowance; see AI credits. Without credits you can still roll and save.

Roll the character

  1. Open the generator

In the Character Vault, press Generate with AI at the top, or choose ✨ Generate with AI from the New character β–Ύ menu.
  2. Choose the system

Under Base details, pick the game in System. The fields below change to the ones that game cares about: a D&D character asks for Rules edition, Level, Species, Class, Alignment, Background, Fighting style and more; Call of Cthulhu asks for an occupation and era.
  3. Set only what you care about

Every choice can stay on Random. Leave Name (optional) blank to have one made up, and pick a Sex or leave it random.
  4. Describe the idea (optional)

In Concept & focus (optional), write the character in a line or two β€” a retired soldier hunting the quartermaster who betrayed his company. It steers the AI extras later.
  5. Generate

Press Generate character. The full sheet appears below, with scores, skills, hit points and gear worked out for that system. Don't like it? Press Regenerate as often as you want; rolling costs nothing.

Add the AI extras (optional)

  1. Flesh it out β€” 1 AI credit

Press ✨ Flesh out with AI. The button reads Writing… while it works, then the sheet gains an appearance, personality and backstory matched to the game and your concept, plus fitting powers, gear and attacks with their to-hit and damage worked out.
  2. Paint it β€” 5 AI credits

Press Generate image. It counts the seconds while it works; the first one can take up to about 30. A full-body picture and a square portrait cropped from it appear beside the name. Regenerate image makes a new one, for another 5 credits.

Keep it

  1. Save, or tweak first

Press Save to vault to keep the character as it is, image included. To change anything first, press Edit before saving: the generated character opens in that system's full sheet, and Create character saves it.

Edit before saving leaves the image behind

The full sheet carries the character's details but not a generated image. If you made one, either Save to vault first and press Edit on the sheet afterwards, or add the image again from the sheet (part 5).

Check it worked

You land on the new character's sheet in your vault. If you made an image, it shows above the sheet and as the portrait.

Members under 18

The AI extras keep everything they write suitable for younger players when the account belongs to someone under 18.

If something's off

β€œYou're out of AI credits…”
Flesh-out and images stop until your allowance renews or you top up; see AI credits. The rolled character is still there β€” Save to vault works without credits.
β€œThe image generator is busy right now (cold start)…”
The first image after a quiet spell can time out. Wait a moment and press Generate image again.
β€œCouldn't write safe details for this character β€” try regenerating.”
The written details didn't pass our safety check. Press Regenerate or change the concept, then flesh it out again.
Saving says your character slots are all in use
Same as part 1: free a slot, upgrade, or add slots on Plus.
