Johann Shmidt grew up an orphan and street criminal in Germany until Adolf Hitler made him his protégé and dressed him as the masked terror agent known as the Red Skull. Throughout World War II he clashed repeatedly with Captain America, and after the war a nerve gas put him in suspended animation. Revived in the modern era, he has led terrorist and hate groups, subverted the U.S. government and returned again and again through cloned bodies. He remains Captain America's defining nemesis, a symbol of fascism opposing everything Steve Rogers stands for.
