Wendell Vaughn was a S.H.I.E.L.D. trainee considered too cautious to be a top agent, yet he became the only person able to safely wear the Quantum Bands once owned by Marvel Boy. After serving as security chief at Project Pegasus, the cosmic entity Eon named him Protector of the Universe and he took the name Quasar. He served with the Avengers and battled cosmic threats like Maelstrom before apparently dying during the Annihilation Wave. Revived in later years, he joined the Annihilators and eventually passed his mantle on before returning to action.

- Quantum Bands: wrist bands that tap the Quantum Zone and serve as the source of his abilities

- Hard-light constructs: shapes energy into solid objects shields and tools
- Flight and space survival: travels through space protected by an energy field
- Quantum jumping: teleports across vast cosmic distances
- Cosmic awareness: senses threats to the universe
- Military and spy training: Army veteran and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent skilled in combat and weapons
