Steering

Steering is when you, as a player, guide your character's choices for out-of-game reasons, such as making a better story or keeping a scene comfortable.

When you steer, you make choices for your character because of what you want as a player: you might have them start an argument because it will make good drama, or walk away from a scene that is heading somewhere you do not want to go. To everyone else it looks like ordinary in-character play. The idea comes from Nordic-style larp, where it is discussed openly as a normal part of play. It works best when everyone understands it, and it never replaces your game's safety calls; if you need to stop a scene, use them.
