Lines and veils

Lines and veils is a consent tool where players agree before a game which content will never appear (lines) and which will only happen off-scene (veils).

A line is a hard limit: that content does not appear in the game at all. A veil is softer: it can happen in the story, but off-scene, implied rather than played out, and the story picks up afterwards. The tool started in tabletop role-playing and is now used in many larps. Usually the organisers ask players to name their lines and veils before the game, and everyone respects them throughout. Because things come up that nobody expected, it works best alongside other tools such as calibration and off-game signals. Your game's own safety brief sets how it is used there.
