Character background

A character background is the history and personality notes behind a larp character, written by the player or supplied by the organisers before the game.

A background usually covers where your character comes from, what they do, why they are here now, and one or two goals or fears to play towards. In ongoing games you normally write it yourself and send it in before your first event so the story team can tie your character into the plot. In many one-off games the organisers write the characters and hand them out instead. Short and flexible usually works better than long and exhaustive. Leave room for the game to surprise you, fit the setting you have been given, and check your game's character guidelines, as some tie your background to the skills you start with.
