Lesson · Wigs

Your first styled wig

A beginner-friendly introduction to choosing, fitting, and doing basic styling on a costume wig for new cosplayers.

A wig is often the single detail that makes a costume feel complete, and the good news is that basic styling does not require expensive tools or years of practice. Before you buy anything, find a clear reference image of the character and note the overall silhouette, the parting direction, and whether the style is sleek, textured, or voluminous. Those three things will guide every decision you make, from which wig you purchase to which tools you reach for first. Fit comes before styling. Put the wig on over a wig cap that is close to your own hair colour, adjust the internal elastic or hook-and-bar tabs until the hairline sits where it should, and check the back in a mirror. A wig that sits too high or slides around will not hold a style no matter how carefully you work on it. Once the fit feels secure, place the wig on a foam or canvas wig head so you have both hands free while you work. For a first project, start with the simplest version of the style: gently comb out tangles with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends and working upward, then re-part the hair using a tail comb and your fingers. If the character has a straight, flat style you may not need heat at all — a little light holding spray and some smoothing is often enough. If the style needs more shape, that is where heat-styling and techniques like spiking come in, and those are covered in the linked entries. Safety matters even with basic wig work. Only use heat on a wig labelled heat-resistant, at the setting the maker gives, and test on a hidden section first. Straighteners and curling wands can burn skin instantly, so keep them away from the lace front of the wig and never leave them resting face-down. Aerosol holding sprays should be used in a well-ventilated space, away from any open flame. Younger makers should have an adult present whenever heat tools are in use. If you are planning to wear the wig at a convention or LARP event, check that any added wires or internal supports meet that event's prop and safety rules.
