Teasing (wigs)

Teasing is a backcombing technique used on wigs to add volume, height, or texture, popular with cosplayers recreating dramatic anime or fantasy hairstyles.

Teasing means repeatedly combing small sections of wig fibre back toward the root rather than toward the tip, which makes the fibres tangle together and puff outward. The result is a deliberately fluffy or voluminous look that would be hard to get on a flat, freshly combed wig. It is one of the simplest ways to add bulk before shaping a style with hairspray or a strong styling glue. Because teasing creates intentional tangles, it is largely a one-way process on synthetic fibre: it is very hard to fully reverse without shedding or frizz. For that reason, most cosplayers tease only wigs they are happy to commit to a permanent style, and they work in small sections so they can control exactly where the volume goes.
