Primer

Primer is a preparatory coating applied before paint to help colour adhere evenly and last longer — useful for cosplayers working with foam, resin, or fabric.

Primer is a base coat you apply to a surface before your main paint layers. Its job is to give paint something to grip, smooth out minor texture differences, and stop porous materials from soaking up colour unevenly. Without it, paint on raw craft foam can streak, peel, or vanish into the surface far faster than expected. Different primers suit different materials, so check that the product suits your base and test it on a scrap first: some solvent-based products can damage certain foams, and a rigid primer can crack on flexible foam. Spray primers are popular for large armour pieces because they lay down an even coat quickly, but use them outdoors or in a well-ventilated space with a respirator rated for organic vapours. Younger makers should have an adult present when using any spray product. Once the primer is fully dry (follow the manufacturer's guidance, as drying time varies), the surface is ready for paint and can later be sealed.
