Mould release

A substance applied to a mould before casting so the finished part comes out cleanly without sticking or tearing, often needed when casting resin.

Mould release is a barrier coat applied to the inside of a mould before you pour or press your casting material in. Without it, many casting materials bond directly to the mould surface, making removal difficult and often damaging either the part or the mould itself. Releases come in several forms — sprays, paste waxes, and liquids — and the right choice depends on both the mould material and the casting material you are using, so always check the manufacturer's guidance for your specific combination. Working with resins and release agents means working with chemicals that can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs. Use these products in a well-ventilated space, wear nitrile gloves, eye protection and the respirator the product label calls for, and keep younger makers supervised by a responsible adult throughout. Allow any spray release to settle before leaning over the mould, and follow all safety instructions on the product label.
