Youmacon: costume, prop and weapon rules
Last checked against the con's own rules on 2026-10-21.
A plain-language summary of Youmacon's prop and weapon rules for cosplayers attending the Detroit convention, drawn from the con's own policy page.
Youmacon holds its prop check at a table near the Joe Louis statue inside Huntington Place. Before you bring any prop weapon onto the convention floor, security must inspect it there. Huntington Place and convention staff keep the right to ask you to return a prop to your hotel room even after it passes inspection, so build your costume with that possibility in mind. No live steel is allowed on the premises under any circumstances. If you buy a real blade in the marketplace, it must be boxed and taken off the property immediately — back to your room or vehicle. Realistic prop firearms are not permitted at all. Non-realistic prop guns may be brought in only if they cannot fire anything, have no moving trigger, and carry an orange safety tip. Nothing that launches a projectile is allowed, including Nerf-style toys. Bows must be unstrung or only loosely strung. Real arrows and bolts are not allowed, tipped or untipped; prop arrows must have no tips and must never be drawn. Real blunt or martial-arts weapons such as nunchaku, billy clubs, and wooden or metal bats are banned. Chains are limited to three feet and may not be used as leashes or restraints on another person. Lightsabers, including metal-hilt versions, are permitted, but indoor lightsaber sparring is not. All prop weapons must be under six feet six inches in total length and must have no sharp edges or spikes that could scratch or break skin, whatever the material. Noise-making devices such as air horns, sirens, and vuvuzelas are not allowed, nor are anything that releases smoke, fire, liquid, or chemicals. The policy on this page was last marked as edited in October 2025, and details can change from year to year. Always check the official Youmacon props and weapons policy page at youmacon.com before you attend, as that page is the authority on what is and is not permitted.
