Letter your pages and set the reading order

Add balloons, captions and sound effects, stress words, point tails at the speaker, attach lines to panels, set the order panels are read in, and write each page's description.

Lettering is what readers read — and what the transcript and screen readers read, so attaching each line to its panel matters.

Before you start

  • A page with panels and art (see part 4).

Add lettering

  1. Pick a tool

Under Lettering: Balloon (B), Caption (C) or Sound effect (F).
  2. Place it

Click where it goes — drop it on a panel to attach it to that panel.
  3. Write it

In the inspector's Text, type the line. Press Enter where you want a line break. Put **two asterisks** either side of a word to stress it (bold italic).
  4. Shape it

Choose a Face (Dialogue, Display, Sound effect), a balloon Shape (Speech — oval or box, Shout — burst, Thought — cloud) and a Size. Fit to text sizes the box around the words.
  5. Point the tail

On a balloon, drag the dot on the canvas towards the speaker; Tail curve bends it, and Remove tail takes it off.

Check it worked

Belongs to shows the panel it's read with — change it if it landed on the page instead.

Set the reading order

  1. Pick Reading order

    Choose Reading order (O).
  2. Click in order

Click the panels in the order they should be read. Filled numbers are yours; hollow ones are the order the page would have anyway. Click one again to take it out.

Check it worked

Panels in reading order follows your order — it's also how Guided view steps through the page. Clear order goes back to the automatic one.

Describe the page

Under Page description, write what a reader who can't see the page needs to know. Drafted from your lettering: offers a start with every line in reading order — Use this draft, then describe the pictures yourself.

If something's off

My asterisks show as asterisks
Only a word between two pairs — **like this** — is stressed. A single asterisk stays as typed.
The transcript has my line in the wrong place
Check Belongs to, and the reading order.
