Pick an issue and read it: layouts, Guided view, transcript and audio

Pick an issue from the title page, read paged, two-page or webtoon, go panel by panel with Guided view, open the transcript, react to an issue, and listen to audio comics.

The reader shows one issue at a time, and remembers your place on your account. A title calls its parts issues, chapters or episodes, and the buttons use its word; this page says “issue”.

Before you start

  • A Waypoint account, signed in.
  • A title to read (see part 1).

Pick an issue

On a title's page, the Up next card has the one issue to open now. Under it, the issue picker lists all of them, grouped by volume where the title has volumes.

  1. Choose a view

Tiles (the default), Filmstrip or List. Your choice is saved on your account; signed out, it's kept in this browser.
  2. Filter the list

All, Unread (anything you haven't finished) or Downloaded. Downloaded appears only in a browser that can keep downloads.
  3. Open an issue

Press its tile, frame or row. A part-way issue opens at your page. The picker's header has a line that reads Not started, 3 of 12 read or All read, and each volume says how many of its issues you've read.
  4. Read the marks

A tile shows its number and a bar for how far you are, with a tick for read, a down arrow for downloaded and a dot for an unstarted issue outside the free and bought ones; its corner says how you reach it — Owned if you bought it, Free (on a paid title), Pass, or the issue's price such as $1.99 (Buy where none is set) — or Offline for a download. Hover or focus a tile for the state in words. Filmstrip and List write it out: Read, Page 5 of 24 or Unread, with the same Free, Pass, price or Owned beside it.
  5. Mark one read

In List, press Mark read at the end of a row (it becomes Mark unread). Signed in only.
  6. Work on several at once

Press Select, then press the issues you want. A bar at the bottom of the window reads N selected and offers Mark read, Download, Add to collection (or Start a collection when you have none) and Clear. Press Done to leave select mode. A volume's own Select picks all of its issues.

Check it worked

Marking a batch read shows a READ! burst and the line in the picker's header updates. Download is covered in part 3.

Read

  1. Open an issue

Press the title's main button, the Up next card's button, or an issue in the picker.
  2. Turn pages

Tap the page edges, swipe, use the chevrons, or the arrow keys. The slider jumps; Pages shows every page as a thumbnail. Tap the middle of the page to show or hide the bars.
  3. Pick a layout

In the bottom bar: Paged, Two-page (wide windows) or Webtoon (one long strip). It's remembered for that title on this device.
  4. Fit the page

The fit button steps through Fit width, Fit page and Actual size, then round again. Pinch, or hold Ctrl or ⌘ and scroll, to zoom in on a page.

Check it worked

Reaching the last page marks the issue read; Mark read in the bottom bar does it if you stop early. On a window about 900 pixels wide or more, an End of issue 3 card then appears beside the last page: Read issue 4 marks this one read and opens the next at page 1, and Back to title goes back. With nothing newer it says You're caught up and when the next one is due. On a narrower window, Next on the last page opens the same card as an End of chapter panel, with Back to the last page.

Go panel by panel

On a page with panels, press Guided (or Enter, or double-tap a panel). Next and the arrow keys step one panel at a time and carry on to the next page. Press Guided again — or Esc — to leave it. It works in Paged layout, on comics whose creator marked the panels.

Read the transcript

Transcript (or T) opens the creator's description of each page, and the text of the page where there is one — for screen readers, or just to read along. On a window about 1,100 pixels wide or more it sits beside the pages and the page keys keep working; on a narrower one it opens over the page.

React

Under the reader, and under How was it? in the end panel: Loved it, Funny, Wow, Moving, Hype. The counts show on the title's page.

Set it up

The gear (Reader settings): Page fit, Background (Black, Grey, White), Animate page turns, Tap the page edges to turn and Go straight to the next … at the end. Settings are saved on this device, for every title.

Listen to an audio comic

An audio comic plays its episodes while the panels follow along. Browse's Audio chip lists the ones the Bindery holds, and the title's buttons say Start listening, Continue — issue 3, 1:20 or Listen to issue 4. They open the listen page instead of the reader.

Audio comics play online, in a browser, and can't be downloaded. Neither app plays them. In the Android app an audio comic you can read says it plays on the website.

  1. Press play

Play (it becomes Pause). The line beside it reads Playing · panels advance with the mix, and the panel on screen changes with the audio.
  2. Move around

Back 15 seconds and Forward 30 seconds jump; the slider, named Position, goes anywhere. The speed button cycles 1×, 1.25×, 1.5× and 0.8×.
  3. Show captions

Press Captions for the creator's description of the current panel; it becomes Hide captions.
  4. Pick another episode

The list beside the player has every episode with its length and your place. All of … under it goes back to the title.

Check it worked

Your place saves as you listen, when you pause and when you leave, so Continue resumes at the second you stopped. Reaching the end shows HEARD! and marks the episode listened; Mark listened does it early.

If something's off

“Contains flashing imagery”
The creator marked this title as having flashing images. Press Continue to the reader or Go back.
“You're reading on too many devices at once…”
Close the reader on another device, or sign it out from your comics settings.
There's no Guided button
Guided view needs panels marked by the creator, and Paged layout.
“That chapter isn't available.”
It may be above your age rating, or no longer published.
There's no Select button in the picker
Select, the per-row buttons and the saved view are for signed-in members.
“This browser can't play this episode…”
Update your browser, or open the episode on a computer in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
“This episode isn't included with your access.” or “This episode couldn't be loaded.”
The listen page checks access each time you press play. If it says Sign in to listen., sign in; for the others, try again, and if it still fails, that episode isn't open to your account.
